Having trouble understaning the requirements for organic certification? if so, you're not alone! this overview is intended to provide an understandable introduction to the Philippine National Standard for Organic Agriculture and certification requirements.
The Philippine National Standard for Organic Agriculture was initially developed by the Organic Certification Center of the Philippines (OCCP) and was adopted by the Department of Agriculture - Bureau of Agriculture and Fisheries Standard (DA-BAFS) after series of public consultation. The Organic Standard was approved in 2003. In 2010, the Organic Agriculture ACt (RA 10068) was signed by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo which further strengthens the legitimacy of the PNS for Organic Agriculture. Furthurmore, this means than an organic product who claims that the product is organic must be certified. Under the regulation, any agricultural products can be produces using organic methods. The PNS cover all agricultural products labelled and sold as "organic" or organically produced". The rule covers organic inputs, crops, animal husbandry, processors, handlers or trades. Parts of the regulation even apply to retailers. As organic operators, it is good for you to understand the requirements, since these may affects parts of your operations.
